Every dancer will know the eternal struggle of loving their body.
From looks to ability, the consequences of dance being a visual art form as well as an athletic feat lead us in the industry to constantly question whether what we look like is directly related to our success. And unfortunately at this stage, it is.
Slowly it is changing. Those bringing up the next generation are identifying the toxicity of traditional dance culture, and are nurturing new souls into being healthy and prioritising strength and technique over the perfect body type. But we still face the stigma everyday.
Changing a stigma is difficult, but can be done through mindfulness and consistent practice. When we talk openly and share knowledge, watch the language we use regarding ourselves, and choose empowerment over shame, we can change the narrative within us, which helps us to communicate the message outwardly as well. Change always begins with the individual before it reaches the community. To change the notion of our success being related to image, we need to start believing that it’s related to who we are as a person.
Remember that what we do is not easy, and not everyone else can do it. Each unique body is strong and talented in their own beautiful way. Comparing two bodies is like comparing an apple and a cat; it’s not possible!
Your beauty stems from what you outwardly put into the universe. The external is fleeting and therefore can’t represent who you are or what you can offer. Your body also works tirelessly as your vessel through life; nurture and love it completely and it will always get you where you need to go.
We all got this. Love and listen to your body, as it’s been loving you since it was created.
